California State Science Fair Results
The 61st annual California State Science Fair took place April 30-May 1, 2012, and students from our district did an outstanding job. Almost 1,000 participants from 421 schools from throughout the state competed. Students from our four junior high schools placed as follows:
- Behavioral and Social Sciences (Junior High)
- Third Place: Megan McQueen, grade 8, “That’s Uncanny! Gender in the Uncanny Valley,” advisor Laura Wilson, La Colina Junior High School.
- Honorable Mention: Anna Brewer, grade 8, “The Effect of Gender and Profile Picture on Popularity of Fake Facebook Accounts,” advisor Marilyn Garza, Santa Barbara Junior High School.
- Honorable Mention: Kally Zheng, grade 8, “The Effect of Age on Ability to Predict Personalities by Analyzing Handwriting,” advisor Brad Penkala, Goleta Valley Junior High School.
- Cognitive Science (Junior High)
- Honorable Mention: William deBruyn Kops, grade 8, “The Correlation between Brain Dominance and the Introvert/Extrovert Personality Trait,” advisor Marilyn Garza, Santa Barbara Junior High School.
- Cognitive Science (Junior High)
- Fourth Place: Daniela Gottesman, grade 8, “Exploring the Relationship among Fingerprints and Toeprints,” advisor Kim Miller, Goleta Valley Junior High School.
- Materials Science (Junior High)
- Third Place: Sarah Douglas, grade 8, “Can’t Touch This: A Study of Latent Fingerprint Detection,” advisor Danielle Bean, La Colina Junior High School.
- Pharmacology/Toxicology (Junior High)
- Honorable Mention: Austin Ambrose, grade 8, “Bio-Friendly Ant Repellant,” advisor Danielle Bean, La Colina Junior High School.
- Product Science-Physical (Junior High)
- Fourth Place: Christopher Robinson, grade 8, “The Effects of Different Exposures on Paints,” advisor Fernando Prado, La Colina Junior High School.
The CAPS (California Association of Professional Scientists) Science Achievement Award was given for projects best illustrating good scientific methodology in a discipline represented by members of CAPS, including physics, chemistry, biological and environmental science, toxics and energy resources.
The CAPS Honorable Mention went to Austin Ambrose, La Colina Junior High School.
