Last Friday, May 18, a group of Santa Barbara High School students made presentations at the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center at UC Santa Barbara as part of a partnership program with the UCSB Linguistics Department. The students were part of the SKILLS (School Kids Investigating Language in Life and Society) program where UCSB graduate students went to Santa Barbara High to teach students about the scientific study of language over the course of the semester. The students gained valuable insight into the value and diversity of language and the nexus of language with culture and society. At the same time the students learned how to conduct research like university students. A web page of the student projects is available at www.skills.ucsb.edu. Mary Bucholtz, Department of Linguistics, and Mirian Gutierrez, UC Pathways coordinator, were instrumental in making the program possible.
