Seven San Marcos High School Athletic Teams Identified as CIF Academic Champions

At 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at Edison Field in Anaheim, seven San Marcos High School athletic teams will be recognized as 2003 CIF Southern Section Team Academic Champions for their exceptional grade point averages (GPA). The following San Marcos teams will each receive a championship banner prior to the baseball game between the Anaheim Angels and the Cleveland Indians:

"I am extremely pleased and proud of the academic accomplishments of our athletic teams. CIF’s recognition is a tribute to our kids for maintaining good grades and excelling in sports programs. But, it is also a tribute to our entire teaching staff, students, coaches, and the parents of our student athletes. Having seven teams recognized for academic achievement is very exciting. I don’t believe we have ever had more than four teams honored in this way during any single year. To have seven teams honored in this way is just incredible," stated Principal Moe Claydon. The San Marcos High School teams were selected from a field of 22 sports and almost 500 schools represented by the CIF Southern Section.

Congresswoman Capps Helps Adams Celebrate National Arbor Day

Congresswoman Lois Capps will be the main speaker at Adams Elementary School’s National Arbor Day celebration at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 25, 2003.

At this fourth annual celebration, children will begin a Johnny Appleseed orchard by planting three apple trees on campus. The Santa Barbara Beautiful Corporation provided two of the trees and the Adams’ Student Council raised money for a third tree. "When children take responsibility for their environment and community at a young age, it follows them into adulthood. Children at Adams are learning the importance of nature in their everyday lives, not just in the science textbook," stated Principal Jo Ann Caines.

In addition to remarks by Congresswoman Capps, the program will include an award for the school’s Arbor Day poster contest winner. Tree-themed artwork by Adams students will be on display.

The public, especially tree enthusiasts, are invited to attend. Adams Elementary School is located at 2701 Las Positas Road, Santa Barbara.

La Colina Junior High to Perform Guys and Dolls

"Luck Be A Lady Tonight," is just one of the many show tunes that audience members can count on hearing at La Colina Junior High’s performance of the musical comedy Guys and Dolls. This Broadway classic will begin at 7:00 p.m., on May 8, 9, and 10, 2003. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students. They can be purchased in advance by calling 967-4506, extension 603.

Guys and Dolls was first produced on November 24, 1950. It was the fifth longest-running Broadway musical of the decade. Set in New York City in the late 1940’s, the story revolves around Nathan Detroit, organizer of a New York City floating crap game. Guys and Dolls is filled with misadventures, music, and monkey business. The theatrical production was based on a book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows and the music and lyrics of Frank Loesser.
