Robin Sawaske and Dr. Davis Hayden to Join the Santa Barbara School Districts
This evening, the Board of Education announced the selection of Robin Sawaske as the district’s new assistant superintendent of elementary education and Dr. Davis Hayden as the districts’ new director of research and evaluation.
ROBIN DOELL SAWASKE
Ms. Sawaske currently serves part-time as UCSB’s Center for Educational Leadership’s program coordinator
and part-time as Santa Barbara County Education Office’s director of school accountability and support services.
The two positions utilize her expertise in school leadership training. She has also been responsible for ongoing professional
development on various topics and lead curriculum audits.
Her previous administrative positions include Santa Barbara County Education Office’s director of program delivery for the California School Leadership Academy (2002-03), administrator of curriculum and instruction (2001-02), and director of teacher programs (1999-01); Carpinteria Unified School District’s principal of Carpinteria Middle School (1992-99) and assistant principal at Canalino Elementary School. She also spent more than a decade as an elementary school classroom teacher in Carpinteria and in Clovis, CA.
Ms. Sawaske earned a bachelor of arts degree in English from California State University, Fresno. She earned a master’s degree in administrative education from California Lutheran University.
“We are delighted to have Robin Sawaske join us,” stated Interim Superintendent Brian Sarvis. “Robin is a dedicated professional and her enthusiasm is contagious. She is very knowledgeable about the expectations of this position and familiar with our district and staff. She is highly regarded by her colleagues.” Ms. Sawaske will begin her new position on March 7.
DAVIS C. HAYDEN, PH.D.
Dr. Hayden is no stranger to the community. He received his master’s degree and doctorate in counseling psychology
from UCSB (his bachelor’s degree in quantum physics, with a minor in biochemistry and anthropology, was granted
by the University of California, San Diego). He once taught at UCSB and also at Santa Barbara City College. At one
point, many years ago, he was a substitute teacher in the Santa Barbara School Districts.
Dr. Hayden is currently a full professor in the Department of Psychology and mental health program director at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. He has a long history with public school systems at the local, state, and national levels. His research on public schools and adolescents has included research regarding testing, evaluation, and instrument development. Dr. Hayden brings to the Santa Barbara School Districts extensive knowledge of test and survey construction, standardization procedures, statistical procedures, computer program development and implementation, and research design.
“Dr. Hayden is a welcome addition,” stated Dr. Sarvis. “He brings a wealth of experience to the position at a time when educational data could not be more important in the delivery of educational services. He understands our focus on closing the achievement gap. I think his knowledge of statistics, expertise in research design, and presentation skills will work well in combination with the technical skills of people in our Department of Research and Evaluation.”
Dr. Hayden will join the districts in mid-June.
Applications for Fall 2005 Available March 1 through April 12 for Early Kindergarten Registration and District Transfers
From March 1 through April 12, 2005, the Santa Barbara School Districts will be accepting applications for early kindergarten registration or K-12 transfers to district schools.
For children who will be five years old by December 2, parents can pick up an early kindergarten registration application from the Principal’s Office at their Santa Barbara Elementary School District neighborhood school.
Most students in our district attend their neighborhood school. In addition, we have several schools of choice. Enrollment at a different campus in the district is possible, if space is available. Parents are encouraged to plan now for their child’s educational needs. From March 1 through April 12, 2005, transfer applications will be available at the Santa Barbara School Districts’ Office of Instructional Support Services, 720 Santa Barbara Street, Santa Barbara, CA. For more information, call (805) 963-4338, extension 276 or extension 278.
Diversity and Social Awareness Weeks in the Santa Barbara High School District
Building on the multitude of activities that happen all year long, for the first time all eight junior highs and high schools in the Santa Barbara High School District will participate in Diversity and Social Awareness Week. The establishment of a common period when all secondary schools would provide activities to heighten diversity and social awareness stemmed from discussions that took place last year in the district’s Diversity Advisory Committee. The senior high schools designated February 7-11, 2005, and the junior highs designed February 14-18, 2005, as the time for this event. Each school’s student leadership played a major role in shaping activities for their respective site.
Activities vary from campus to campus, but student clubs and organizations have put together a host of activities that include poster displays, art contests, ability awareness information, performances of Horizon Line (a one-person interactive assembly sponsored by the National Coalition for Community and Justice), presentations by Holocaust survivor Judith Meisel, Anti-Defamation League “Know Your Rights” workshops, music, peace and diversity pledge, dance troupe, assemblies, t-shirt decorating and diversity fashion show, and more.
At La Colina Junior High, a schoolwide read-around will take place. Each teacher will read one “chapter” of the book Buddha Boy each period. The school librarian abridged the book so that the story will be completed after the sixth-period reading takes place. At lunchtime on Thursday, February 17, students will have the opportunity to talk about Buddha Boy and confronting prejudice. Another activity at La Colina will include daily advisory period discussions (one topic per day) of myths and facts about people with disabilities, similarities and differences, understanding stereotypes, and avoiding name-calling and put downs.
At San Marcos High School, one of the activities of the week will include classroom presentations by the S.P.E.A.K. Against Hate Club. Club members will go into classrooms and present “When Hate Comes Home,” an interactive DVD developed and provided free of charge by the Anti-Defamation League.
