Job Description: Campus Safety Assistant

SALARY

Classified salary schedule, range 26. Initial placement shall be determined according to training and experience; maximum salary placement will be at mid-range. This position is covered by employee selected insurance plan. Benefits include holidays, vacation and sick leave.

DEFINITION

Under the direction of the assistant principal, patrol and monitor an assigned campus; maintain order, safety and security; assure student compliance with school and district policies and regulations; perform grounds and custodial duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Patrol and monitor an assigned campus to maintain order, safety and security; unlock doors and school facilities; monitor lunch areas, walkways, restrooms and parking lots. Respond to classroom calls of disturbance, behavior problems or related situations; escort students to office for disciplinary action as necessary; write referrals according to established guidelines as necessary. Assist in the investigation of illegal activities; search backpacks, cars and lockers for alcohol, weapons, drugs and drug paraphernalia and other related articles according to established procedures and district policies. Enforce school and District rules, regulations and policies for the safety and security of students, staff and property; report unusual activities or unauthorized persons on campus to appropriate personnel. Observe students during passing periods between classes, lunch and break periods; assure timely return of students to class. Prevent student conflicts and fights according to established guidelines and intervene as necessary; advise students of consequences if rules are violated as necessary. Prevent illegal parking and loitering on school grounds according to established procedures. Communicate with law enforcement agencies regarding gang activity, students involved in illegal activities, fights and related matters. Monitor unattended classrooms until a certified staff member arrives; oversee suspension center as needed. Perform minor maintenance and custodial work as assigned; assists with a variety of campus activities as assigned. Maintain positive relationships with students, parents, staff and community; communicate with students and staff to provide and receive information regarding school activities. Administer minor first aid and CPR according to established procedures as necessary. Perform related duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and experience working with junior high/middle school or high school-aged students.

Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of basic methods of individual and group supervision; knowledge of basic interests, attitudes and emotional development of adolescents; knowledge of skills utilized to maintain positive relationships with students and adults; knowledge of interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; knowledge of First aid techniques. Ability to patrol and monitor an assigned campus to maintain order and security in an assigned school setting; ability to assure student compliance with school and district policies and regulations; ability to learn, interpret, apply and explain policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Ability to perform duties with patience, tact and good judgment and within established guidelines; ability to learn district organization, operations, policies and objectives; ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; ability to observe situations and accurately determine an effective course of action.

Physical Abilities: Ability to stand for extended periods of time; run; climb stairs; hear and speak to exchange information.
