Job Description: Computer Support Technician

SALARY:

Classified salary schedule, range 52. Initial placement shall be determined according to training and experience. This position is covered by employee selected insurance plan. Benefits include holidays, vacation and sick leave.

DEFINITION:

Under the direction of the coordinator of instructional technology, perform a variety of responsible and technical duties related to the repair, maintenance, installation, configuration and alteration of microcomputers and peripheral equipment; provide technical support and training to district employees on a variety of software applications and other technology equipment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Perform on-site troubleshooting of personal computer hardware and software malfunctions and analyze system failures; inspect, isolate and diagnose malfunctions and determine appropriate repair procedures; replace defective parts and restore equipment to proper operations; utilize a variety of testing and measuring devices, computer diagnostic software and various hand and power tools to repair and maintain microcomputers and computer networks; install network systems; test data lines; connect data ports and cards; set up hubs and concentrators; load software and assign users and configure software; change passwords, restrictions, and add software to allow access to other networks as needed; arrange for and follow-up on repairs made by outside vendors; order parts, repairs and accessories as needed and facilitate timely return of equipment; process related paperwork; pick up orders from local vendors as necessary; set up new computer equipment for instructional and administrative purposes; install, configure and test software applications on LANS and microcomputers; provide technical support and training to employees on a variety of computer equipment, software packages and other technology equipment including printers, CD-ROMs, scanners, modems, networks, disk drives and others; maintain repair requests on appropriate database; process calls into database format; respond by phone or in person; respond to user requests for assistance in a timely manner; prepare and maintain records of work performed, materials used, labor required and vendors used by the district; provide information and technical support to faculty, administrators and students regarding the safe and proper operation, care and maintenance of various computerized and electronic systems and equipment; assist in the preparation of specifications for purchase of computer hardware and software. Perform related duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to associate’s degree in computer science, management, information systems, electronics or related field and two years experience in computer support activities.

Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of computer hardware specifications and capabilities; computer software capabilities and applicability; basic principles of computer design and operations; tools, materials and equipment used in PC communication techniques and interfaces; network, PC and Macintosh software programs utilized by the district; interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; technical aspects of field of specialty; record-keeping techniques. Ability to operate IBM, Macintosh and network computers and software systems; troubleshoot computer hardware problems to the component level and replace faculty components; troubleshoot software problems and diagnose and correct malfunctions; make minor repairs and arrange for major repairs with appropriate vendors; install and upgrade computer system hardware and software; provide training and assistance to District employees related to computer equipment and software applications; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; work independently with little direction.

Licenses and Other Requirements: Valid California Class C driver’s license and an acceptable driving record to qualify for insurability by the district’s insurance carrier.

Physical Abilities: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard; seeing to view a computer monitor; hearing and speaking to exchange information; lifting and carrying moderately heavy equipment; bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
