District Computer Support Technician

SALARY

Classified salary schedule, range 58. Initial placement shall be determined according to training and experience; maximum salary placement will be at mid-range. This position is covered by employee selected insurance plan. Benefits include holidays, vacation and sick leave.

DEFINITION

Under the direction of the Director of Research, Evaluation and Technology, install, configure and maintain Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs), microcomputers, data communications equipment, network operating systems, and software applications for users of Information Technology systems; respond to user requests for assistance and correct malfunctions; and set up and maintain microcomputer software and related systems and applications. In addition, assist site computer support technicians either over the phone or by traveling to the sites to assist in all the technical functions at district sites.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Install, maintain and configure LANs, WANs, network operating systems, microcomputers, data communications equipment, and software applications for district users; connect data ports and cards; set up hubs and concentrators; load software and assign users and configure software; change passwords, restrictions and add software to allow access to other networks as needed;  perform hardware assembly, installation, and configuration, and perform minor repair of microcomputers, LANs and WANs;  set up and configure new and existing microcomputer software, network operating systems, and related systems and applications; document configurations; reconfigure and upgrade software as appropriate;  install, maintain and repair data circuits and other data communications hardware and software; install cables;  read manuals to learn installation procedures and basic application functions; test applications following installation to assure proper operation; orient users to new software and demonstrate new software operation to users;  respond to user requests for assistance and malfunction correction; serve as a technical resource to users, providing technical information and assistance by phone and in person;  operate a variety of microcomputers and auxiliary equipment such as printers, scanners, testing equipment, meters, and hardware and software diagnostic tools;  maintain a variety of records related to installation configurations, inventory, cabling equipment maintenance and repair history, time worked, and services provided; assist with ordering supplies and software; assist and/or train site computer support technicians or computer technicians for the district.   Perform other related duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to two years college-level course work in microcomputers and networking applications and systems, and two years increasingly responsible experience in microcomputer, network, and data communication hardware and software installation.

Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of principles and basic operations of LANs, WANs, and data communication systems; network operating systems, DOS, Windows and Macintosh software applications and languages utilized by the district; advanced network and computer operating systems and standard applications programs employed on a variety of microcomputers; configuration, documentation techniques.; tools, materials and equipment used in installing and testing microcomputer systems; basic purchasing procedures and requirements; basic record-keeping techniques; technical aspects of field of specialty; inventory methods and practices.  Ability to Install, maintain and configure LANs, WANs, network operating systems, microcomputers, data communications equipment, and software applications for users of Information Technology systems; operate DOS, Windows and Macintosh software systems in both stand alone and a network environment; respond to user requests for assistance and malfunction correction and provide technical support; set up and maintain microcomputer software and related systems and applications; serve as technical resource to users in the use of microcomputers and related equipment;  perform troubleshooting in person, over the WAN, and over the phone; develop operating and troubleshooting plans for others; configure software to appropriate hardware; perform basic diagnostic checks and take appropriate corrective action; read, interpret and apply detailed and technical manuals and oral instructions; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; work independently with little direction.

Licenses and Other Requirements: Valid California Class C driver’s license and an acceptable driving record to qualify for insurability by the District’s insurance carrier.  Verification of driving record will be required of applicant selected for position (contact Dept. of Motor Vehicles for information on how to obtain verification).

Physical Abilities: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and hand tools; seeing to drive and to view a computer terminal; hearing and speaking to exchange information; lifting and carrying moderately heavy equipment weighing up to 70 pounds; bending at the waist, kneeling and crouching; twisting/turning, walking, climbing, reaching and pulling to install cable; sitting for extended periods of time.
