District Translator

Salary

Classified salary schedule, range 60. Initial placement shall be determined according to training and experience; maximum placement will be at mid-range. Benefits include holidays, vacation and sick leave.

Definition

Perform written and verbal translations to and from English and Spanish. 

Examples of Duties

Prepare written translations of general or technical materials including newsletters, letters, flyers, notices, minutes, reports, forms, handbooks, instructional materials and other documents. Edit and review materials for comprehensibility and accuracy; make corrections as needed; utilize a speller or thesaurus, dictionary and other materials to assist in translations. Operate a computer to prepare a variety of materials. Maintain records of translation requests. Perform oral translations for parents and students as directed. Assist with clerical functions including answering telephones and assisting the public as needed. Perform related duties as assigned.

Employment Standards

Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and two years experience translating materials to and from English and Spanish, preferably in an educational setting.

Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of correct oral and written usage of English and Spanish; operation of a computer and assigned software programs; interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; basic record-keeping techniques. Ability to read, write, translate and interpret English and Spanish; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; type at 45 words net per minute from clear copy (verification of typing speed required with application);  maintain routine records; and operate a computer terminal.

Licenses and Other Requirements: Must take and pass District Translator Examination. 

Physical Abilities: Seeing to read a variety of materials; hearing and speaking to exchange information; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard; sitting for extended periods of time.
