Job Description: Food Service Assistant I

Salary

Classified salary schedule, range 14. Initial placement shall be determined according to training and experience; maximum salary placement will be at mid-range. This position is covered by employee selected insurance plan. Benefits include holidays, vacation and sick leave.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Food Service Assistant I incumbents perform basic and routine food service preparation, assembly, cashiering and other activities related to the preparation and serving of food. Food Service Assistant II incumbents perform more responsible food service preparation and service at an assigned production kitchen, including cooking and baking a variety of foods. Incumbents may assign work to student helpers or others in the absence of the lead and typically serve as second in charge in a production kitchen.

Definition

Under direction of the Director, Food Services (see summary above), assist in quantity preparation and serving of foods for the district breakfast and lunch programs; assist in maintaining food service facilities in a clean and sanitary condition.

Examples of Duties

Assist in the preparation, cooking, baking and service of food including preparing sandwiches, salads, fresh fruit, Jell-O and heating food items; prepare dressings, mashed potatoes, gravies, vegetables and assembling various ingredients as assigned; wrap and re-heat food items according to established procedures. Heat, portion and serve food to students and staff according to established procedures. Clean serving counters, tables, chairs, food containers, and other food service equipment; prepare food and beverages for sale; count and set-up plates, trays and utensils; assist in the sale of food. Sweep and mop floors in case of spills to assure safe work environment. Operate dishwashers and wash trays, plates, utensils, and other serving equipment. Store cases of food, beverages and paper, cleaning supplies and food preparation equipment and utensils on shelves or in containers; take and maintain food and beverage inventories as assigned; store kitchen equipment. Set up salad bars for food service. Operate electric slicer, mixer, ovens, grills and other equipment. Perform cashiering duties and serve from satellite food stations and snack bar locations as assigned. Operate a cash register; receive money and make change; count money and lunch tickets and prepare deposit slips and submit to appropriate personnel as required. Load and unload food service containers on and off delivery vehicles as assigned. Perform related duties as assigned.

Employment Standards

Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.

Knowledge and Abilities:Knowledge of proper methods of preparing and serving food in large quantities; basic kitchen utensils and equipment; sanitation practices related to the handling and serving of food; interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; proper lifting techniques. Ability to perform duties in a safe and sanitary manner; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public; operate a cash register and make change accurately; learn the rules, regulations and requirements of the National School Breakfast and Lunch Program; maintain food service equipment and areas in clean March 2, 2009 and sanitary condition; meet schedules and timelines; understand and follow oral and written directions; communicate effectively in English.

Physical Abilities:Lifting heavy canned food cases; stooping and bending at the waist; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate various kitchen equipment and utensils; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to store food and related materials.
