Job Description: Head Custodian I

SALARY

Classified salary schedule, range 31. This position is covered by employee selected insurance plan. Benefits include holidays, vacation and sick leave.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Head Custodian I incumbents provide work direction and participate in custodial activities at a district elementary school or administration building site. The Head Custodian II classification performs lead duties at the middle or junior high school sites and requires a broader scope of tasks and interaction with school staff. The Head Custodian III incumbents lead larger custodial crews at high schools.

DEFINITION

Under the direction of the principal, train and provide work direction and guidance to assigned custodians at an assigned elementary school; perform responsible custodial activities at a school site to maintain buildings, rooms and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition; perform minor maintenance and repair of equipment and systems.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Perform responsible day time custodial activities at assigned elementary school or administration building site; sweep, scrub, mop, wax and polish floors and vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops and other work areas; spot clean and shampoo carpets. Plan, assign, monitor and participate in cleaning and custodial functions at district elementary school sites; inspect assigned school site and report condition of facilities; train, assign, review and coordinate work of assigned staff. Inspect completed work for accuracy and compliance with instructions and established standards; inspect assigned areas and report safety, sanitation and fire hazards to appropriate authorities; report need for maintenance repairs to appropriate personnel. Perform minor maintenance to school facilities and equipment; fix leaking faucets and sinks; remove graffiti, repair desks, replace light bulbs and lighting tubes as necessary. Determine quantity of warehouse stock and inventory items to replenish school's inventory; complete warehouse requisitions and purchase requests for custodial supplies; receive, verify and distribute supplies and equipment. Clean classrooms, cafeterias, restrooms, offices and related facilities as assigned; dust and polish furniture; spot mop spills and remove debris. Clean and disinfect drinking fountains, sinks and toilets; fill dispensers with towels, soap and toilet paper; clean mirrors, tile, windows and walls. Clean chalkboards and erasers and empty pencil sharpeners; move and arrange furniture. Clean and remove graffiti from walls and walk ways; prepare work orders for major graffiti removal and maintenance work as necessary. Perform routine grounds maintenance work including watering lawns, flower beds and other landscaped areas; prepare work orders for major grounds maintenance needs as appropriate. Confer with school administrators regarding custodial and maintenance projects and activities at assigned site; assist faculty and staff with custodial and minor maintenance issues. Lock and unlock doors and gates as appropriate; maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; turn alarm system on and off as appropriate. Dispose of trash according to established procedures; follow established sanitation procedures and standards. Operate cleaning equipment such as vacuums, floor stripper, buffer and polisher, carpet shampooer and others. Perform related duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and two years responsible custodial experience.

Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial work and non-technical maintenance; requirements of maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition; principles of training and providing work direction; appropriate safety precautions and procedures; modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning and preserving floors, black boards, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures; basic record-keeping techniques; proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies; proper lifting techniques. Ability to plan, train and provide work direction and guidance to assigned custodians at an assigned elementary school; assign and inspect the work of others; work independently with little direction; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; properly estimate quantity of required custodial supplies and equipment; apply and explain schedules, procedures and use of equipment and supplies used in custodial work; maintain tools and equipment assigned in clean working order and provide proper security; use cleaning materials, equipment and methods according to pre-determined standards; apply knowledge of the schedules, procedures and use of equipment and supplies used in custodial work; perform minor non-technical repairs; observe and report need for maintenance and repair; understand and follow oral and written directions; meet schedules and time lines; communicate effectively with others.

Physical Abilities: Standing and walking for extended period; bending at the waist; lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying heavy objects; twisting/turning; climbing ladders; seeing to assure proper and complete cleaning; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate power cleaning equipment.

Hazards: Exposure to cleaning chemicals and fumes.
