Job Description: Head Custodian II

Salary

Classified salary schedule, range 34. Initial placement shall be determined according to training and experience; maximum salary placement will be at mid- range. This position is covered by employee selected insurance plan. Benefits include holidays, vacation and sick leave.

Definition

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, train and provide work direction and guidance to assigned custodians at a middle or junior high school site; perform responsible custodial activities at an assigned school site or facility to maintain buildings, rooms and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition; perform minor maintenance and repair of equipment and systems.

Examples of Duties

Plan, assign and monitor and participate in cleaning and custodial functions at a middle or junior high school site; inspect assigned school site and report condition of the facility; train, assign and review the work of assigned staff. Confer with school administrators regarding custodial and other maintenance projects and activities at assigned middle or junior high school site; assist faculty, staff and students with custodial and minor maintenance issues. Prepare and maintain a variety of records related to assigned duties, including work orders and time sheets; determine quantity of stock items needed to replenish inventory; complete requisitions and purchase requests for custodial supplies; receive, verify and distribute supplies and equipment as appropriate. Train and provide work direction to assigned staff; develop and prepare work schedules; review, prioritize and coordinate duties and assignments to assure effective work flow and facility operations; assist supervisor with performance evaluations, disciplinary action, promotions and other personnel matters according to established District procedures as directed. Inspect completed work by custodial and maintenance staff for accuracy and compliance with instructions and established standards; inspect assigned areas and report safety, sanitation and fire hazards to appropriate authorities; report suspicious or unauthorized individuals on campus. Report need for maintenance repairs to appropriate authority; maintain security of buildings; perform routine checks on air conditioning and heating systems. Sweep, scrub, mop, wax and polish floors and vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops and other work areas; spot clean and shampoo carpets. Clean and remove graffiti from walls and walk ways; prepare work orders for major graffiti removal and maintenance work as necessary. Set up auditorium for special events; set up chairs, tables and other facilities for special events and activities; strike set-ups and store chairs and tables; clean up debris following events. Lock and unlock rooms, doors and gates as appropriate; maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; turn alarm system on and off as appropriate. Operate cleaning equipment such as vacuums, floor stripper, buffer and polisher, shampooer, steam cleaner, high-pressure sprayer, power blower, and power sweepers; operate a hand truck to transport items. Replace light bulbs and lighting tubes; dust and polish furniture and woodwork and make minor, non-technical repairs such as repairing chairs and desks. Perform related duties as assigned.

Employment Standards

Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and three years increasingly responsible custodial experience.

Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial work and non-technical maintenance; requirements of maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition; principles of training and providing work direction; appropriate safety precautions and procedure; modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning and preserving floors, black boards, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures; basic record-keeping techniques; proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies. Ability to plan, train and provide work direction and guidance to assigned custodians at a middle or junior high school site; assign and inspect the work of others; work independently with minimum direction; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; properly estimate quantity of required custodial supplies and equipment; apply and explain schedules, procedures and use of equipment and supplies used in custodial work; maintain tools and equipment assigned in clean working order and provide proper security; inspect and assure the security of facilities during assigned shift; use cleaning materials, equipment and methods according to pre-determined standards; apply knowledge of the schedules, procedures and use of equipment and supplies used in custodial work; perform minor non-technical repairs; observe and report need for maintenance and repair; understand and follow oral and written directions; meet schedules and time lines; communicate effectively with others.

Physical Abilities: Standing and walking for extended period; bending at the waist; lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying heavy objects; twisting/turning; climbing ladders; seeing to assure proper and complete cleaning; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate power cleaning equipment.
