Job Description: Library Technician

Salary

Classified salary schedule, range 30. Initial placement shall be determined according to training and experience; maximum salary placement will be at mid-range. This position is covered by employee selected insurance plan. Benefits include holidays, vacation and sick leave.

Definition

Under the direction of an assigned site administrator, perform library functions including organization, distribution, and storage of library and audio-visual materials; research materials as needed, check books, textbooks, and materials in and out at the circulation desk; process and shelve library materials and textbooks; assist students and staff in the selection of library materials, using computer and on-line programs.

Examples of Duties

Elementary: Provide library services at an assigned elementary school library; provide informational, clerical, technical and computer/on-line service to staff and students; promote student use of the library. Assist teachers in researching materials for classroom use. Operate a computer to type, process and maintain the library electronic catalog system for effective tracking of books and other library materials; update computerized catalog databases as needed. Assist students in locating and selecting desired or needed materials from bookshelves. Check books and materials in and out at the circulation desk; process returned books and place in appropriate shelf location. Instruct and assist students in the use of the card catalog and database; assist individuals and groups of students in the use of basic reference sources in finding and selecting materials. Maintain record of overdue materials and send overdue notices to students and teachers; collect fines and payments for overdue and lost items; prepare receipt of fines collected. Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to assigned activities; submit to appropriate personnel and department as required. Arrange, design and prepare appropriate library displays, decorations, bulletin boards, and seasonal bibliographies; maintain a clean and orderly library environment; monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior. Repair and maintain damaged library materials and perform minor repair to audio-visual equipment as necessary. Process obsolete library materials according to established procedures. Provide work direction and guidance to student helpers as assigned. Perform related duties as assigned.
Secondary: Provide library services provide informational, clerical, technical and computer/on-line service to staff and students; promote student use of the library. Assist teachers in researching materials for classroom use; notify teachers of newly arrived books applicable to classroom topics or themes; check out audio-visual equipment to teachers. Operate a computer to type, process and maintain the library electronic catalog system for effective tracking of books and other library materials; update computerized catalog databases as needed. Provide textbook services at assigned library; type textbook orders from teachers; process and stamp new textbook stock and maintain related records; Prepare textbook inventories and distribute to teachers; process textbook loss/damage fees according to established procedures; set up payment schedules, write receipts and assign detention as necessary. Order library books, textbooks and other media material for the library as directed; research publishers and receive price quotes; requisition and purchase materials according to established guidelines. Oversee school-site audio-visual service; establish and maintain inventory of school equipment, check out equipment and deliver to classrooms. Check books and materials in and out at the circulation desk; process returned books and place in appropriate shelf location. Employment Standards

Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by college-level training in library science or related field and two years experience in a library or media center environment.

Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of library practices, procedures and terminology; Dewey Decimal System and card/computer cataloging system; operation of a computer terminal and data entry and retrieval techniques; library reference materials and resources; audio-visual equipment and modern media materials; district curriculum, reading levels and appropriate reference materials; filing, indexing and inventory procedure; modern office practices, procedures and equipment; recordkeeping techniques; correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; oral and written communication skills; interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Ability to operate a computer terminal and enter and retrieve data; learn, apply and explain policies, procedures, rules and regulations; check books and materials in and out at the circulation desk; shelve library materials. Assist students and staff in the selection and location of library materials. Process a variety of library materials. Monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior in the library. Perform clerical duties such as filing, duplicating and typing. Maintain library in a neat and orderly condition.  Work independently with little direction. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.  Maintain records and prepare reports. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Physical Abilities: Sitting, walking or standing for prolonged periods of time; bending, reaching, stooping, and moderate lifting of library materials; visual acuity to read books and media materials. Ability to hear and understand speech at normal room levels; pushing and pulling carts; reaching horizontally and above the shoulders to shelve and reach books; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a telephone, computer keyboard and standard library equipment.
