Job Description: Senior Gardener II

Salary

Classified salary schedule, range 32.

Definition

Under the direction of the principal or vice principal, perform semi-skilled gardening and grounds maintenance duties in the beautification of grounds at an assigned high school; prepare athletic fields for physical education or sporting events as assigned; train, schedule and provide work direction to assigned staff.

Examples of Duties

Perform a variety of semi-skilled gardening and grounds maintenance duties in the beautification of assigned high school site's grounds and landscaped areas; prepare, measure, mark, line and maintain athletic fields for physical education and other sporting events according to established procedures and specifications; install temporary fencing; trim and mow lawns, athletic fields and other grounds; utilize a power edger to edge around walks, shrub beds and athletic equipment; renovate, aerate and cultivate lawns; operate a variety of equipment, such as mowers, rotor-tiller, sod cutter and related hand and power tools; perform varied duties in the transplantation, planting, fertilizing, pruning and trimming trees, hedges and shrubs; weed, rake and water grounds; apply fertilizers and weed control methods to eradicate weeds and other pests according to established procedures; operate hedge trimmer, hand and power tools; make routine adjustments and minor repairs to equipment; train, schedule and provide work direction to assigned staff for special events and routine maintenance; utilize back pack blower to remove leaves and debris; spray and remove weeds; rake leaves and remove trash; sweep walkways; assist in moving and arranging bleachers, furniture and equipment and perform minor custodial work for special events. Assist in the maintenance and removal of athletic or equipment; perform minor sprinkler repair. Perform related duties as assigned.

Employment Standards

Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and three years general grounds keeping experience in gardening or grounds maintenance.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Operation of hand and power tools and equipment used in grounds keeping and athletic field maintenance; grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking and weeding; methods, equipment and materials used in gardening and grounds keeping work; health and safety regulations.
Ability to:
Perform semi-skilled gardening and grounds maintenance duties including mowing, edging and weeding; perform routine and semi-skilled grounds maintenance duties; prepare and maintain athletic fields; use a variety of vehicles, tools and machines utilized in the basic trade; operate power equipment safety and efficiently; mow, edge, water, weed, fertilize, rake and cultivate lawns, flower beds, athletic fields and other landscaped areas; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Licenses and Other Requirements

Valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record to qualify for insurability by the District's insurance carrier.

Physical Abilities: Lifting, pushing and pulling heavy objects; seeing to perform gardening and grounds work; heavy physical labor; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate grounds vehicles, equipment and tools; bending at the waist; walking and standing for extended periods of time.
