Strategic Plan 1998-2000

Prepared by the Strategic Planning Task Force
May 1998

Strategic Directions and Goals

STRATEGIC DIRECTION 4: TECHNOLOGY

Today’s students live in an information age and the high technology workplace requires computer literacy in every occupation and profession. The Districts believe that technology is an integral part of the continuum of learning at every level. Every student will be provided access to technology and taught the necessary skills and knowledge to function successfully in the classroom, in the workplace, and beyond. Nevertheless, technology is a tool that supports – and not drives – the curriculum.

STRATEGIC GOALS:

  1. Cultivate technology leaders and champions at each school site and at the Districts’ level.
    • Involve parents, teachers, librarians, and students at each school site in developing and implementing a strategic technology plan.
    • Identify technology mentors and role models at each site or in the community who have demonstrated the technology skills necessary to successfully implement technology into existing curriculum.
    • Identify a Santa Barbara School Districts technology leader with expertise in the areas of software and hardware, someone who can be a resource person to the school site technology teams and personnel in implementing their plans.
  2. Train teachers in technology applications and usage.
    • Increase professional development technology training for instructional and administrative staff.
    • Provide release time for teachers to observe their peers who are successfully using technology for student learning, both inside and outside the Districts.
    • Establish multiple strategies for teacher training to meet diverse levels of readiness in order to have students utilize technology in their classrooms and to support learning goals.
  3. Integrate technology into the curriculum.
    • Curriculum to include consideration of the scope and sequence of technology skills.
    • Develop technology standards and measures of current/relevant skills and knowledge.
    • Have each school consider relevant diversity issues in planning curriculum and access to equipment by everyone.
    • Assess the impact of technology on learning and academic achievement.
  4. Provide access to technology for all student and staff users.
    • Identify the technology needs of each site in terms of the need for facilities, purchasing and maintaining hardware and software, Internet connectivity, technical personnel, and funding needs.
    • Identify corporate partnerships and external funding sources to support the Strategic Technology Plan and goals.
    • Install computers with appropriate applications in every classroom in the Districts.
