STRATEGIC DIRECTION 5: SELF-RESPONSIBILITY FOR LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT
Students take responsibility for their learning and remain motivated when the schools consistently and meaningfully encourage and support their development by academic counseling and parental involvement. When students choose the classes, teams, and student organizations they need to achieve their goals, they are taking responsibility for their learning and development and preparing to become lifelong learners.
STRATEGIC GOALS:
- Students learn to take responsibility for their own learning and development.
- Each student will learn how to develop learning goals, and develop self-assessment strategies to measure how well his/her performance reaches the Districts’ standards.
- The teacher and student together establish a system for holding students accountable for goals.
- Students will acquire the technical, critical-thinking, problem-solving and research skills to prepare them to become lifelong learners and, in turn, have occupational choices.
- The Districts will provide technical resources necessary to help students improve their capacity for learning (e.g., tutorials, access to technology, etc.).
- Schools will promote extra-curricular activities designed to cultivate and strengthen students’ individual talents and interests.
- Parent involvement is recognized as a necessary component of students’ success.
- Parent programs present a range of strategies that help parents support and encourage students to take responsibility for learning (e.g., providing a quiet place at home for uninterrupted study, rewards for success, etc.).
- Meet students’, parents’, and staff’s needs for regular information about students’ progress and programs (newsletters, phone calls, teacher conferences, etc.).
- Clarify and communicate expectations for Santa Barbara School Districts’ performance and content standards to students and parents.
