Other Early Education Programs

CalSAFE

The CalSAFE Center at Santa Barbara High School provides services to pregnant teenagers and teenage parents who are enrolled at all area high schools. Parents qualify for the program until age 19; children qualify while they are 0-5 years of age.

Infant and toddler children are provided with high-quality early education services on the Santa Barbara High School site while teen parents attend high school classes. Both pregnant teens and teen parents are offered assistance with their academic coursework. They also attend prenatal and parenting classes and complete a supervised one-hour lab in the center each day.

The major goal of the program is to provide support services to teen parents so that they can remain in high school and graduate. The program has met this goal with a 95 percent success rate over the past 20 years.

Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY)

Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) is a developmentally appropriate, substantive early intervention school readiness program that helps parents teach their 3-5 year-old children at home, creating experiences for their children that lay the foundation for success in school and later life. This program is provided at no cost to participating families.

The HIPPY program empowers parents as the primary educators of their children in school and in community life in order to maximize the chances of successful early school experiences. Parents develop positive attitudes and involvement in the family education and learning. They come to understand the importance of a child’s health and development and become aware of community resources available.
