Letter to the Santa Barbara School Districts and the Santa Barbara Community
After much thought and consideration, I have accepted the position of superintendent of the Lucia Mar Unified School District in San Luis Obispo County.
A great deal of soul searching has gone into this decision. This community and school system have been my home for 14 years. It is difficult leaving a position where I have enjoyed the support, encouragement, and friendship of so many people. But, this move affords some exciting new personal and professional opportunities.
Throughout my years in the Santa Barbara School Districts, I have been incredibly fortunate to work with a wonderful team of teachers, administrators, support staff, board members, and parents who are deeply committed to public education. Together, through a series of educational reforms, challenging programs, and the hard work and dedication of staff, we have seen significant gains in academic achievement at the elementary and secondary levels. As I watch students accept end-of-year awards for academic achievement and see a new wave of hopeful, excited graduates prepare for the next phase of their lives, I am reminded of the successes. There is still work to be done, and I know that our team will continue to provide a first-class education for all students.
Our districts have dealt with some very challenging issues, most recently, the budget cuts. But, the compassion of this community has left an indelible impression on me. Whether it is a bond that needs to be passed, a program that is in jeopardy, or an extra set of hands that are needed in the classroom, it is truly inspiring to witness the partnership of schools, families, and the community at large.
Thank you for many years of support and the opportunity to serve this wonderful district.
[Dr. Flores will be in the Santa Barbara School Districts through July 2004. On June 17, 2004, the Board of Education voted to appoint Dr. Brian Sarvis as interim superintendent, effective August 1, 2004. Dr. Sarvis is currently the districts’ assistant superintendent of elementary education/research and technology. ]
